リチョーはそんな貧困な生活を続ける事もできなくなり、詩人の夢も果てて、家族の心配もあり、数年の後に官僚の職に戻ったが、以前共に働いた下僕たちは出世しており、その下で働かせられる事に、気高いリチョーは深く傷つき鬱になった。楽しいことは何もなく、次第に感情の機微も虚ろいはじめた。一年後、ついにリチョーは心神も喪失し、夜中に突然起きて、発狂しながら暗闇に姿を消した。永遠に戻ることはなかった。
